Most studies on Japanese learning web-based materials focused on listening comprehension systems or developed multimedia materials and games for beginners, not advance learners. The study hence aimed at developing Japanese learning web-based materials for advance learners with interviews, pre-test and post-test, and questionnaires to discuss the effectiveness of Japanese web-based materials on them. The study also provided suggestions of improving Japanese learning web-based materials. Literature review showed: (1) Kanji compound words were considered to be the main content as developing learning materials for advance learners since many Taiwanese people got confused with their usages and pronunciations. (2) By using web-based Japanese learning materials to teach Kanji, scenarios should be set in natural situations and appropriate usage. (3) Hyperbook learning system contained advantages of both paper and the Internet as learning materials. Therefore, the study applied a situational conversation clip via Hyperbook learning system to develop Japanese Kanji compound words as learning materials. The findings were as follows: (1) It showed significance that the learners improved 40 points averagely by using materials of Japanese Kanji compound words. (2) Situational conversation clips helped the learners to memorize the words’ meanings, usages, pronunciations and accents. Most of them thought the clip was interesting and the plots were close to our daily life. (3) The learners would like to try Hyperbook learning system but suggested the interface design should be improved.
