本論文從布希亞的客體理論以及文化研究的觀點分析唐迪力羅《瓊斯大街》、《白噪音》及《毛二世》三本小說中的迷文化與名人崇拜現象。名人本身可視為空符號,迷的宗旨則在替這些空符號製造意義,然而極端的迷翻轉粉絲與名人間前者為主體、後者為客體的關係,粉絲因而發現名人形象背後只有空洞,迷對象是無法被了解與掌控的。迪力羅小說中的許多角色就是這樣極端的粉絲。
第一章檢視三本小說中藝術、文化,與歷史的商品化與消費。第二章探討迪力羅如何將粉絲描述成既是病態的異常者,又是能抗拒資本主義的反消費者。第三章指出迷是逃離布希亞所謂誘惑的表現。第四章從布希亞致命策略的角度證明粉絲過度的迷以及名人對主體性的過度追求都導致自我毀滅,讓主體從布爾喬亞╱資本主義加鎖中獲得解放。
This thesis analyzes fandom and celebrityhood in Don DeLillo’s Great Jones Street, White Noise, and Mao II from the perspective of Baudrillard’s object theory. Cultural studies scholarship on fandom is drawn upon to further support this reading. I argue that celebrities are inherently empty signs for which fandom aims to produce meaning. However, extreme fandom, as practiced by some of DeLillo’s characters, reverses the relationship between the fan subject and the fan object, so that the fan subject recognizes the void behind superficial celebrity images and realizes it is impossible to exercise sovereignty over the fan object.
Chapter One looks at the commodification and consumption of art, culture, and history in the three novels. Chapter Two discusses DeLillo’s characterization of fans as both pathological deviants and resistive anti-consumers. Chapter Three argues that fandom is an attempt to escape from the Baudrillardian seduction. Chapter Four examines celebrity and fandom from the perspective of Baudrillard’s Fatal Strategies to show that when taken over its zenith, fans’ and celebrities’ pursuit of subjectivity brings destruction upon itself and frees the subject from bourgeois/capitalist fetters.
