經濟學上用來評估一家廠商的生產績效優劣,最常用的方式是效率分析,而生產活動偏離生產邊界的程度代表效率高低。在職業運動產業逐漸興起後,如何評估球隊的績效表現,似乎已經成為目前成了現在學界新興的研究方向。球隊比賽運作過程就像廠商生產過程一樣,必須運用各種投入然後得到產出。在棒球比賽中,比賽的投入可為球隊的各種攻守技術統計,例如:打擊率、投手防禦率以及得分等等,可以是教練或是球員的資歷,也可以是薪資或是財務支出,產出則是比賽的得分數、勝場數或是勝率。因此,在本篇文章中,我們利用經濟學中的效率分析來分析球隊的表現優劣,由各球隊相近的財務以及薪資支出下,從球隊的攻守技術統計、總教練資歷及外籍球員的影響,評估球隊發揮其潛能的程度,藉以了解球隊經營效率的優劣。
評估效率的方式有很多,由於球隊比賽以及運作的性質,跟一般廠商都很相近,統計誤差、外在干擾跟技術改善都佔了很重要的部份,所以在選擇模型時,選的是隨機邊界效率分析模型 (Stochastic Frontier Approach, SFA),除了利用隨機邊界分析法分析球隊的效率以外,也利用預估的效率值來預測比賽結果排名。我們利用中華職棒大聯盟1990到2008年的球季例行賽作為實證樣本,發現隨機邊界分析模型效率評估的結果排名,與預測比賽結果排名上,並沒有顯著統計性的差異。
Academically, “efficiency analysis” is the most common method to evaluate the productivities of one manufacturer in terms of Economy. It explains the cost and benefit ratio through the degree of deviation between margins and product activities. After emerge of professional sports in recent decades, how to evaluate the performance of one professional sport team, this has become a new research topic academically. In most ball games, the competition process looks similar to the manufacturer production process. One has to utilize resources as inputs and then obtains outputs. In a professional baseball game, statics of defense and offense makes up one game such as batting average, ERA of a pitcher, RBI,…etc.Inputs may be the maturity of coaches and players, or financial expenses like the salary of players as well. The score, winning games, and winning percentages would be the results. (outputs) Therefore, in this article, we use the “efficiency analysis” from Economics to analyze the team performance. Under a close salaries and financial expenses, from the statistics of defense and offense, the effects of head coach and foreign players, how these factors would help one professional baseball team to reach its potential and understand the strength and weakness of one professional baseball team in terms of its team management.
The evaluation methods are varies; similar with manufacturing processes, statistical errors, external interferences, and technical improvements show their importance. As a result, the model of Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA), in addition to this analysis, the team's estimated efficiency ratio will be used to forecast the ranking of game result as well. We use the regular season data as sample from CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League) among 1990 to 2008. The SFA model discovers that there is no significant statistic difference in actual ranking between the predicted “model results” and the forecasted “game results”.
