The orthography to phonology correspondence of Chinese can be either described by a dichotomous index of regularity or by a quantitative index of consistency. Regularity is defined as whether the sound of a character is identical with that of its phonetic radical, ignoring the tone difference. The consistency is defined as whether characters sharing the same phonetic radical have the same pronunciation. Previous studies have shown that reading Chinese will be affected by regularity and consistency. This study aims to explore when and how the knowledge of phonetic consistency is acquired by children in learning to read different types of Chinese characters. In experiment 1,Children of 4th and 5th grades were asked to name a set of phonograms, which can be divided into two consistency levels (high and low) and three word types (regular, irregular, and bound phonetics). Both grade 4 and 5 children name the high consistent character more accurately than low consistent character (p<.01). The post-hoc analysis revealed that, the 4th and the 5th grade children showed higher accuracy for reading high consistent characters than for reading low consistency characters and this effect was found in reading regular and irregular characters but not for reading character with bound phonetic radical. To further explore when the awareness of phonetic consistency can be development in reading bound phonograms, we further manipulate the character frequency in addition to the character types and phonetic consistency and we also add grade 6 children into the experiment 2. The overall pattern of grade 4th replicated our previous findings on experiment 1. However, for children of grade 5th and 6th , the consistency effects were found in reading all three character types when they are low in frequency. Our data suggested that, by learning to read a large number of Chinese characters, children will gradually realize that some characters with a phonetic radical correspond to the same or similar pronunciations. To build up the sense of phonetic consistency, the characteristics of phonetic radical play a role.
