益生菌常被定義「可促進宿主健康之微生物,或其細胞成分可促進宿主健康之微生物」(例如預防大腸癌及發炎性腸病變)。本研究採隨機、雙盲、安慰劑對照實驗設計,共計有40位健康之受試者全程參與,其中20位參與試驗組,另20位參與安慰劑組。30g含益生菌的奶粉及30g不含益生菌奶粉以液體型式每天給予試驗組與安慰劑組之每位受試者食用2次。本研究共進行7週,試驗分成三個階段,第一階段為一週的飲食調整期 (run-in period),第二階段為四週的實驗期 (administration period),第三階段為停止攝食後,為期2週的觀察期 (follow-up period)。結果顯示,受試者攝食含益生菌奶粉可使腸道中雙叉桿菌及乳酸桿菌均顯著增加 (p<0.05),並使腸道中有害菌產氣莢膜梭菌顯著減少 (p<0.05)。攝食含益生菌奶粉一週後顯著增加糞便重量。此外,糞便通過腸道的時間也顯著縮短。

Probiotics are defined as “live micro-organisms, when administered in an adequate amounts could provide health benefits on the host. This was a randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study. Twenty subjects were included in probiotic group and twenty subjects were in the placebo group. 30g of probiotics-containing milk formula or non-probiotics containing milk formula was supplied as liquid type for each subject twice per day. Results showed the subjects supplemented with probiotics containing milk formula after 4 weeks significantly increased Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. (p<0.05), and decreased fecal Clostridium perfringens (p<0.05). In addition, the fecal weight was significantly increased and the passing time through intestine was also greatly shortened
