The purpose of the study was to investigate the mediating effect of the 2×2 achievement goal on relationship between perceived competence, implicit theory of ability and self-handicapping (claimed, behavioral, & other-enhanced), based on the hierarchical model of achievement motivation (Elliot, 1999). 294 collegiate athletes (167, male; 127, female) with an average of 20.94 years participated in the study, and the hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results indicated that perceived competence negatively predict claimed and behavioral self-handicapping, entity theory of ability positively predict all three types of self-handicapping. Besides, results also showed five set of partial mediation including”perceived competence to mastery approach goal to behaviral self-handicapping”, “entity theory to performance avoidance goal to claimed self-handicapping”, “entity theory to performance approach goal to other-enhanced self-handicapping”, “entity theory to performance appraoch goal to claimed self-handicapping”, “entity theory to mastery approach goal to behavioral self-handicapping”. The results that the mediated effect of achievement goal on the relationship between entity theory and self-handicapping was significant supported the hypothesis. It was suggested that coaches and sport-related staff can provide more positive feedback and emphasize on mastery climate to reduce the mediated effect of achievement goal between perceived competence, entity theory and self-handicapping.
