In the autumn of 1598, Tang Xian-zu (1550 – 1616) published the Kun-qu (name of a traditional Chinese opera) Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion). In this work, the leading actress Du Li-niang and the leading actor Liu Meng-mei are a couple who fight against the feudalistic conventions, break through the rank of rich and poor, cross the hedge between life and death, and finally get united with each other. This story deeply impresses the audiences and the leading characters later become the representatives of the sublimated love.

In 2008, Lisa See (1955 – ) published the English version of Peony in Love, the leading actress Peony and the leading actor Wu Ren are portrayed as a couple who live under the restrictions of the patriarchal social system, and suffer from the boundary between life and death. In contrast to Li-niang and Meng-mei, Peony and Wu Ren solve the difficulties in their own way, and perfect their affection by means of their everlasting faithfulness to love.

See admitted that she adopted several essences from Tang’s Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion) while inditing the volume Peony in Love, whereas Tang stated that in the process of constructing the work, he had taken several Chinese folktales as his reference materials. As Zheng Yun-yi has suggested in “Cong Xi-shi Shuo dao Liang Zhu (From Xi-shi to Butterfly Lovers),” the process of constructing the distinctive characteristics of folktale characters consists of three parts: the primary miniature (ji-xing), the developmental stage (fa-zhan), and the final phase of maturity (cheng-shu). The folklores which have been transmitted from immemorial time, and regarded as the original sources of Tang’s masterwork Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion), will be catalogued as the primary miniature of Li-niang, Meng-mei, and their love, Tang’s Mudan Ting(The Peony Pavilion), the developmental stage, and See’s Peony in Love, the final phase of maturity.

Due to different living backgrounds and trends of thoughts, Tang and See characterized the images of Li-niang and Meng-mei in quite divergent ways. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons of the change of images, and the transformation of the sublimated love.
