摘要
　　本文主旨在討論德里羅《白色噪音》死亡與人之間緊密不可分離的關連，並以海德格「存有」的觀念來加以探討。在小說中，大學教授傑克頂著假學術的光環，並且號稱是學術界的希特勒權威。然而，卻深陷一連串由媒體釋放的死亡陰影泥淖。試圖想要消除心理恐懼，卻屢遭失敗。本論即以哲學家海德格「非本真」的觀念著手探究傑克的死亡境遇。
　　本論包含五個章節：在第一章序寫小說家德里羅的文學聲望，並解析其大部分的作品多少觸及死亡意象；死亡的觀點接續以海德格基本的哲學來剖析。在第二章，「本真屬己」與「非本真屬己」的存在觀念藉由托爾斯泰的短篇小說《伊凡•伊里奇之死》與德里羅的《白色噪音》細部描述。在此文第三章，小說主角傑克的「害怕」由「非本真屬己」存在的面向解析。第四章：「本真屬己」的「怖慄」將帶領傑克發現他「存有」的「非本真屬己的面向」，是以一種唯唯諾諾的形式呈現；此種觀察更將他進一步領近自身的「存有」中。第五章：「成熟的本真意義」藉由德里羅的短篇作品《身體藝術家》完整呈現。以上三本文學著作皆流露一種正面的信念：只要秉持「死亡的整全」以及「關懷他人」來認知「存在的有限性」，就能持續開顯在自己的本真屬己中。

Abstract

This thesis deals primarily with the theme of death in Don DeLillo’s work White Noise. In the novel, Jack, a Hitler expert at College-on-the-Hill, is haunted by the specter of death which takes on the form of images emanating from various aspects of modern society: the media, medical technology and the shopping center, among others. This thesis probes the thorny life-and-death issue of existential identity from the perspective of Heidegger’s ambiguity of Being. His inauthentic attitude toward death is presented in its familial, social and technological contexts, followed by an analysis of the experiences required for him to pass through to an authentic state of Being.
Heidegger’s core ideas serve as the basis for a comparative analysis of White Noise and Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilich. Both Tolstoy and DeLillo create protagonists who are forced to undergo a struggle to overcome inauthenticity by being forced to come to grips with the fact of their mortality. Jack’s dilemma is examined with respect to the inauthentic notions of idle talk, curiosity, and ambiguity, so as demonstrate how the inauthentic state of Being comes do dominate individual existence in the absence of the consciousness of one’s own mortality. Then, the concept of technological paradox is employed to examine Jack’s post-modern condition. Only by going through an existential ordeal is Jack allowed to experience a sense of authentic wholeness. Finally, DeLillo’s novella The Body Artist is offered to verify the importance of Heidegger’s authentic idea of death at a later stage of his creative development.
