This study was designed to retrospectively analyze the long-term outcome of cases with non-grafted lateral trap-door sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement 5 years post-surgery.
A total of 80 implants that were placed in 44 patients from 2004 to 2006 were included in this study. A minimum of 3-mm bone height in the alveolar ridge was required in all cases. All implants were placed simultaneously with sinus lifting procedure through a lateral approach by the trap-door, open-window method for sinus lifting without placement of any bone graft material. Preoperative, 6-month and annual postoperative panoramic radiographs and computed tomographic (CT) scans at 2-year period follow-up and a panoramic radiograph at 5-year post-operative follow-up were used to evaluate the outcome of bone height after maxillary sinus lift procedure. The gained sinus bone height in the 2-year and 5-year radiographs were evaluated and analyzed. The implant survival was defined as when the prosthesis had been delivered without infection, pain, or mobility at the 5-year follow-up.
All 80 fixtures healed uneventfully and none of the patients developed sinusitis or any complication that may have led to the loss of the implant. All implants survived up to the 5-year follow-up. The bone height gained at the expense of the sinus at 2-year follow-up did not changed significantly at the 5-year radiograph. Results of this study confirm the long-term success of non-grafted sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement.
