  本研究以溝通功能的理論為主來探討翻譯與預設的關係,預設是源自於語用學的一個專有名詞,用來分析訊息的邏輯觀念,因而被視為一種語用推斷。從翻譯的角度來看,預設的用意主要是闡明那些受到情境、文化因素的詞句。法斯特 (Fawceet, 1997, p. 124)指出情境和文化的預設最能使譯者感興趣,因此,本研究將檢測翻譯過程中這兩個層面的預設。諾德 (Nord, 1997, p. 59) 認為每項翻譯工作應該都有“要圖”,但必須符合譯文的狀況來達到它的功能性。其次,本研究探討預設在“翻譯要圖”中所扮演的角色。

  首先,本研究分析譯者如何預設於原文情境中詞彙的本義、涵義以及連接關係,以便產出適當的譯文。其次,探討學生文化預設不適當的原因。假使譯者想要達到溝通的目的,他應該預設譯文讀者的背景,本研究探討兩個與文化預設有關的議題:(1) 與文化有關的詞語涵義;(2) 從功能翻譯的角度來探討譯者是如何做決定,當他們在面對原文和譯文文化差異性。最後,從翻譯要圖的讀者、地點、動機及功能來評估原文和譯文間差異性。

  研究結果顯示原文情境及文化的預設會影響並決定譯文語詞的意思,除此之外,在翻譯工作執行前,研究者發現翻譯要圖的重要性。為了要達到溝通的目的,譯者的預設在翻譯中扮演的一個重要的角色。
 This study employs the communicative functional theory to explore the relationship between translation and presupposition. The linguistic term, presupposition, is regarded as a pragmatic inference, i.e. involving in logic analysis of information from a pragmatic viewpoint. The usage of presupposition in translation is to clarify the meaning of a linguistic expression embedded by contextual and cultural factors. Fawcett (1997, p. 124) points out that contextual and cultural presupposition are of most interest to translators. Hence, in this study the contextual and cultural presupposition in the process of translation are going to be firstly examined. Nord (1997, p. 59) indicates that every translation task should be accompanied by a (translation) brief that defines the conditions under which the target text should carry out its particular function. Therefore, in this study the role of presupposition in the translation brief will be secondly studied.

 The study firstly analyzes the issue regarding how a translator presupposes the denotative and connotative meanings of lexical items and the cohesive elements in a source context to produce properly translated result. Secondly, it explores the reason why the trainee students make incorrect cultural presuppositions. Realizing that a translator should presuppose target text (TT) readers’ cultural background knowledge if he or she wants to achieve a successfully communicative purpose, the study thus discusses the following two aspects with regard to cultural presupposition in translation: (1) connotative meanings related to cultures, (2) decision making in the cultural gaps between source text (ST) and TT. Finally, this study evaluates the divergence of readers, place, motive and function in a brief between ST and TT.

 The result of this study shows that contextual and cultural presuppositions in ST influence and determine the meaning of a linguistic expression in TT. It further demonstrates that the significance of translation brief before a translation case should be considered. A translator’s presupposition on context and culture thus plays an important role in achieving a communicative purpose in translation.
