Studied on the different Sodium Chloride (NaCl) concentration (0.2(CK), 9.0, 13.5
dS.m-1) plus 5 mM potassium nitrate or calcium chloride solution of ‘Sweetie’ and ‘New Century’ seedlings of melon (Cucumis melo L.) growth and ions concentration. The results that salinity plus 5 mM calcium chloride treatment led to increase in plant fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll content, protein content, soluble carbohydrate content, antioxidant enzymes activities (CAT, POD, APX), uptake of Ca2+, K+ and Mg2+ concentration in the leaf with a resultant improvement in K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ ratio, accompanied by decreases proline concentration, MDA content and membrane permeability. The salinity plus 5 mM potassium nitrate treatment led to increase in plant fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll content, protein content, soluble carbohydrate content and to accumulated K+ concentration in the leaf, accompanied by decreases proline concentration, membrane permeability, Na+ and Cl- concentration with a resultant improvement in K+/Na+ ratio. Potassium nitrate treatment significantly increased Mg2+ concentration in the ‘New Century’ leaf, but ‘Sweetie’ did not. The results showed the salinity plus 5 mM calcium chloride or potassium nitrate treatment increased K+, Ca2+ concentration and decreased Na+ accumulation to improved plant growth and physiological parameters, conjecturing addition calcium chloride or potassium nitrate solution could improve salt tolerance of melon.
Studied on the different Sodium Chloride (NaCl) concentration (0.2(CK), 9.0, 13.5
dS.m-1) plus 5 mM proline or glycinebetaine solution of ‘Sweetie’ seedlings of melon (Cucumis melo L.) growth and ions concentration. The results that salinity plus 5 mM proline or glycinebetaine treatment led to increase in plant fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll content, protein content, proline content and soluble carbohydrate content. The plant accumulated Na+ concentration on salinity stress, but plus 5 mM proline or glycinebetaine treatment did not reduce Na+ concentration, accompanied by greatly accumulated proline content. Addition of proline treatment increased K+, Ca2+ concentration and K+/Na+ ratio and decreased Cl- concentration on the lower NaCl concentration. Addition of glycinebetaine treatment increased K+, Ca2+ concentration and Ca2+/Na+ ratio in the melon root. Therefore, the salinity plus 5 mM proline or glycinebetaine treatment could increase proline content, K+ and Ca2+ concentration and decreased Cl- concentration to effectively improved plant growth and physiological parameters, conjecturing addition proline or glycinebetaine could increasing salt tolerance of melon.
