本研究探討機器翻譯系統將不同體裁的醫學類文本,包括:醫學期刊及藥物使用參考書籍,由英文譯為日文之可譯性及差異。一般而言,機器翻譯較適於處理「知訊類」文本,但同屬於知訊類之不同體裁文章會呈現可譯性之差異。本研究發現:在詞彙錯誤中,醫學期刊的錯誤率較藥物參考書籍高(醫學期刊共228處錯誤;藥物參考書籍共156處錯誤)。在句法錯誤中,醫學期刊的錯誤率也高於藥物參考書籍(醫學期刊共69處錯誤;藥物參考書籍共48處錯誤)。而在語用錯誤中,藥物參考書籍的錯誤率反而較醫學期刊高(藥物參考書籍共63處錯誤;醫學期刊共33處錯誤)。整體而言,醫學期刊的錯誤率確較藥物參考書籍高(醫學期刊共330處錯誤;藥物參考書籍共267處錯誤),表示藥物參考書籍的機器翻譯可譯性較醫學期刊來得高。本研究說明機器翻譯在處理兩種體裁的醫學文章有所差異。
儘管本研究範例數量有限,且只針對單一機器翻譯系統研究,但研究結果已提供數據參考,可讓使用者了解日本現有機器翻譯系統之優缺點。透過本研究,使用者可選擇適於機器翻譯處理的醫學文本體裁如藥物參考書籍,以大幅縮短翻譯所需的時間,並充分發揮機器翻譯輔助人工翻譯之效益。
This thesis investigates the variation in the translatability of MT-produced translation from English to Japanese across two genres of the same medical text type: a medical journal and a drug reference book. Generally, an informative text is considered suited for machine translation but different genres of the same text type will show different degrees in the translatability for MT application. The findings of this research show that the medical journal holds a higher frequency of lexical errors (228 errors) than the drug reference book does (156 errors). In terms of syntactic errors, the MT output of the medical journal shows a higher frequency of errors compared to 48 errors in the MT output of the drug reference book. As for the pragmatic errors, the drug reference book shows a higher frequency of errors (63 errors) than the medical journal (33 errors).
Overall, the medical journal shows a much higher frequency of errors (330 errors) than the drug reference book does (267 errors), indicating that the translatability of the drug reference book through MT application is much higher than that of the medical journal. The result of this study sheds light on the variation in the translatability of MT-produced translations across two medical genres. Despite the limit in the MT system (only one) and the sample size, this study provides some insights into the strength and weakness of the existing MT system in Japan in processing different genres of medical texts. By consulting the result of this study, the user may select the appropriate genre of medical text to maximize the effectiveness of MT application in their daily translation work and enjoy the great economical benefits.
