在國際社會與經濟全球化的衝擊下，作為世界共通的語言，英語學習的重要性是不容置疑的。而單字的學習，不僅是英語學習的基礎，更是英文能力的關鍵指標。然而單字的學習，光是機械條列式的記憶是不夠的。已有許多的研究顯示，想要有效地學習單字，必須在文章裡學習。也就是透過廣泛閱讀學習者有學習興趣的文章內容，來認識與學習更多 的單字。
本研究利用網路上眾多豐富多樣的英文學習資源為基礎，實作一智慧型英語學習平台，依照學習者的單字學習需求，由網路自動擷取適合個別學習者的文章內容，以提升英文單字的學習效率。研究中將平台分成三個主要功能部份：個人化閱讀興趣設定模組配合內建的「優質學習網站資料庫」提供學習者設定學習興趣與方向；智慧型網路英語學習文章擷取代理模組能代理學習者自動搜尋網路上豐富且免費的學習文章；複習規劃與學習難點監控模組能監測學習難點，自動調整規劃學習者學習與複習的歷程。最後，為了增加系統的實際應用性，更增加了適用於行動裝置瀏覽器的界面，設計出能執行於目前最新行動科技裝置PDA與Smartphone架構的整合性平台，讓學習者能隨時享受行動學習(Mobile Learning)的方便與樂趣。在實作完成後，以系統滿意度量表問卷方式，從系統可用性、資訊品質與介面品質三個構面，利用SPSS因素分析來驗證本研究的結果，依照分析結果顯示，問卷量表能正確反應此三個假設的影響因素。就整體結果來說，受測者認為本系統對其英語學習的效能確實有所助益。此外，在討論中，本研究也提出詳細的分析結果之討論與建議。
