不論身處於哪一個時期，人們總是依照自身的需求去建構「中國」的形象。
而美國人總是懷抱著「自由中國夢想」看待中國，自以為扮演保護者和楷模的角
色。然而從越戰開始，極端年代學者認為美國是不折不扣的帝國主義侵略者。不
同於其他主張圍堵中國的學派，極端年代學者曾對中國懷抱著極高的理想性，中
國對他們而言是一個「理想化的他者」，為一正義的救世主。本文以CCAS
（Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars）學者范乃思（Peter Van Ness）為主要的研究對象，輔以研究極端年代學者中部份CCAS 學者，以文本分析法和訪談
法為研究方法，「外在研究法」為主要的分析途徑，檢視其思想變遷的時代背景
以及其思想，探究其「中國觀」、「美國觀」、「正義觀」，包括其中的相互建構關
係和時代因素。研究結果發現，范乃思等一干極端年代學者於1960 年代和1970
年代，在中國對外資訊不足的情況下，受到強烈正義感和一些現實誘因的驅使，
為了批判美國而不自覺地建構出一個理想的中國形象，但這個形象與真實的中國
有著極大的落差。後來受到「中國對革命的背叛」、文革真相和天安門事件的影
響，摧毀了這個形象，也成為這群學者思想的重大轉折點，從此他們開始扮演監
督中國人權的角色。
