The study is aim to compare the performances of the patients suffering from mild dementia caused by Alzheimer Disease (AD) and age-matched elderly subjects on Chinese Picture Naming Test. In order to investigate the relation between naming ability and semantic memory which is considered degenerated in AD patients, the study also tests the same subjects with a word definition task. The materials include 4 standard items, 4 named items and 4 unnamed items, the latter two of which are based on the results of naming test. 60 demented and 60 normal subjects are recruited and further grouped into 60-70, 70-80, and 80-90 year-old groups. The results show a significant difference between the two groups on Chinese Picture Naming Test. Age is proved to be an important factor for naming, especially in the dementia group. On the other hand, the results of word definition task suggest some deficits (in retrieving physical information) in semantic memories of AD subjects. The successfulness of naming also has influences on the definition performances, which is a support for the relation between naming ability and semantic memory to some degree. At last, short versions of Chinese Picture Naming Test are also made for clinical uses.
