在世界歷史發展的過程中，愛爾蘭和臺灣恰巧有著相仿的歷史背景。愛爾蘭在英國政府長期的殖民統治之下，其國民的身份認同因此產生混亂；而臺灣目前仍因政治因素面臨相似的問題。這兩個國家的首都，都柏林和台北，皆可被視為當代殖民城市的代表；這兩個城市市民的生活樣態則反映出愛爾蘭人和臺灣人因身分認同錯亂所衍生之衝突與對立。
喬伊斯眼中的都柏林充滿著英國與愛爾蘭之間的矛盾情結：不平衡的經濟關係、複雜的權力位階以及持續不斷的政教衝突。而他的《都柏林人》則揭示了當時愛爾蘭人最迫切需要解決的身分認同問題；同樣的，白先勇的《臺北人》也揭露出相似的自我認同問題。雖然中國和臺灣基本上有著相同的文化和書面語言，但隨著國民政府來臺的大陸移民卻也因此面臨身分認同錯亂的困境。本論文將探討《都柏林人》與《台北人》這兩本小說中因身分認同所產生之衝突與對立，以及比較這些衝突之異同。今日的都柏林人已經為國際社會所承認接受，而臺北人卻還沒有為自己找到一個合適的國家身分。或許，愛爾蘭的歷史經驗可以幫助當代臺灣社會解決自我認同的難題。

As a coincidence in world history, Ireland and Taiwan share very similar historical and political experiences. After the long-term rule of the British government, Ireland had to face the difficulties when striving for independence and the confusion when searching for national identities; meanwhile Taiwan was, and still is, struggling. The capitals of both countries, Dublin and Taipei, can be seen as the symbols of contemporary colonized cities. The lifestyles of people in both cities moderately reflect these of other residents in Ireland and Taiwan. In Joyce’s Dubliners, the contradictions between the British and the Irish are obvious: in the unbalanced economic situations, the complicated power relation between opposite genders, and the unceasing political and religious conflicts. The Dublin under Joyce’s pen reveals the most urgent problems of contemporary Ireland in his time. Correspondingly, in Pai’s Taipei People, the residents of the city confront similar problems of in the quest of self-identity.
Although China and Taiwan basically share the same culture and written language, the mainlanders who came to Taiwan with the KMT emigrating government in 1949 could not acquiesce to assume their new identities as new “Taiwanese.” Their confusion when identifying themselves as Chinese or Taiwanese is one of the main issues of Taipei People. However, these two famous works do not end up with the same conclusion. Dubliners indicates the predicament which the Irish people confronted in their struggle for while assuming their appropriate identity, while most of the characters in Taipei People are lost in time and self-indulgence of what they were before they truly became members of Taiwan society. Today’s Dubliners have been accepted by the international community with their own nationality, while present day Taipei people still have not found themselves a proper label. The historical experience of Ireland could be used, perhaps, as a good reference resource for contemporary Taiwanese society in helping to solve the problem of self-identity. This thesis compares and contrasts the conflicts by the confusion of multi-identification in both short story collections.
