Courage is one of necessary characteristics for the soldiers. If we measure courage by explicit measurements, it might be affected by social desirable responding and the validity of introspection. In order to avoid these measurement errors, the purpose of this study is to construct Courage Implicit Association Test (Courage IAT) which could overcome the above-mentioned measurement errors. In the pilot study, courage words and non-courage words were derived from participants producing and courage references. After 105 participants evaluating, 10 courage words and 10 non-courage words which were for Courage IAT were chosen respectively through evaluative procedures. In the formal study, fifty-eight participants were assessed the explicit courage, implicit courage, courage behavior, and explored the role of social desirability in implicit and explicit measures of the courage. Explicit courage was measured by Woodard & Pury Courage Scale (WPCS-23), Courage Assessment Scale, and Courage Single Scale. Implicit courage was measured by Courage IAT and Peer Courage Evaluation Scale, and courage behavior was measured by dread box, 3000 meters running score and peer nomination scale. The results found that courage IAT is unrelated to the explicit courage measure and the social desirability scale. It provides support for the criterion-related validity of the courage IAT.
