Alliances are perceived to be critical sources of value creation and competition advantages of focal firms. While total value creation in the alliance for all participants is important, the relative extent of value each partner extracts from the alliance is also critical. Value creation and value appropriation are fundamental concerns to form strategic alliances.
This work is an exploratory research toward configurations and their performance of partner selection and governance mechanism. Based on the perspective of value-based strategy, this study identifies critical constructs of partners’ characteristics when selecting alliance partners and relative governance mechanism at the first stage, and then adopting the taxonomy approach of organizational configurations to explore the holistic relationship of partner selection and governance mechanism, and to investigate which type of configuration has better performance.
Four configurations of partner selection and governance mechanism, namely value exchange based partnership, value relationship oriented partnership, value co-created partnership and value combination partnership, are identified using cluster analysis upon collected empirical data. ANOVA is applied to reveal the relationship of configurations and their performance and the regression analysis model is used to justify the correlation among partner selection, governance mechanism and alliance performance. Three-dimension graphs are also plotted to visualize the connection of each configuration with the performance.
The taxonomy shows that among the four configurational alternatives, two are associated with superior equifinal outcomes. This work also finds out that the interactions of partner characteristics and governance mechanism have significant positive impact on alliance performance. It appears non-linear relationships exist among partner selection, governance mechanism and performance. The potential of alliance success can be improved when superior performance configurations of partner selection and governance mechanism are identified.
