Traditionally the construction industry has been delivering construction designs in the form of Autocad drawings. However, with the relatively matured development of “Building Information Modeling (BIM)” softwares, there can be different softwares corresponding to various categories such as reinforcing steel, appearance, and electrical and mechanical parts. BIM model has introduced the advantages of variable viewing angles and simpler design variation approaches. In this study we select the more commonly used BIM graphics software Autodesk REVIT and compare its 3D models and features of adjustable object parameters with traditional 2D (Autocad) drawings in order to analyze the difference in performance between 3D and 2D operating processes. We will also explore the effectiveness and value of using building information model to solve practical engineering issues. Based on an actual construction case provided by a certain structural engineer firm, in this study we have verified the effectiveness of BIM model established by REVIT. The results of this study indicate that the visualized BIM model can indeed help review and correct construction issues at the design stage, and the introduction of BIM can significantly reduce the occurrence of errors and reworks during construction such that BIM can be regarded as an important tool for value engineering. However, it will take significant amount of time and resources for the establishment and professional judgment of the reinforcing steel of BIM due to the structure type and the limitation of the software itself. BIM can provide a lot of definite information and benefits required by many construction projects in advance. However, the requirements of cost and manpower investment in equipment such as computer and software are important cost factors at the current stage for general enterprises to consider.
