打工度假(Working Holiday)是一種新型態的旅遊方式,根據澳大利亞商工辦事處統計,前往澳洲打工的人數從2005年的739人攀升至2010年的10,188人,此數據顯示出,參與海外打工度假的人數持續成長中。
本文探討影響年輕人海外打工度假意願之因素,以澳洲、美國與英國三個國家為例,並用個人特性(年齡、打工經驗)、五大人格特質(敏感性、外向性、開放學習性、親和性、勤勉自律性)與知覺風險(社會與環境風險、代理與工作場所風險)為研究變項,分析影響年輕人參與海外打工度假意願之因素。其中,澳洲為第一個提供台灣年輕人打工度假的國家,也較廣為人知;此外,根據美國國務院統計,2011年全體國際學生人數,台灣人數排名第五,此顯示出年輕人前往美國學習之偏好;另外,英國近年才開放國人前往打工度假,相當引人注目,故本研究選取澳洲、美國與英國為研究對象。
研究樣本取自於北部地區大專院校學生及年輕工作者,年齡介於18至31歲,共計發放300份,回收有效問卷204份,回收率68%;採用多元廻歸分析進行假說驗證。
研究結果顯示影響年輕人在不同國家參與打工度假的因素不盡相同:
1.年齡對於參與澳洲、美國、英國打工度假意願有顯著負面影響;此外,打工經驗對於參與澳洲、美國打工度假意願則有顯著正面影響。
2.敏感性對於參與美國、英國打工度假意願有顯著負面影響;外向性對於參與美國、英國打工度假意願則呈現顯著正面影響;親和性僅對於參與澳洲打工度假意願有顯著正面影響;開放學習性、勤勉自律性與參與澳洲、美國、英國打工度假意願之關係並不顯著。
3.環境與社會風險、代理與工作場所風險對於參與英國打工度假意願呈現負面影響。
本研究結果可對代辦業者提出多項有用的的建議;如:提供訊息給在學學生,或評估其人格特質適合前往哪些國家,量身規劃行程,使學生在課業繁忙下,得到最新及正確的訊息,畢業後即可出發;並建議業者建立品牌口碑,使國人對代理機構建立信賴,提高打工度假意願;由於打工度假相關文獻仍屬少數,本文亦可彌補個人特性、人格特質和知覺風險在海外打工度假相關文獻的不足。
Working holiday is a new type of travelling. According to the statistics from Australian Commerce and Industry Office, the number of people coming to Australia on working holiday had soard from 739 in 2005 to 10,188 in 2010. This phenomenon reveals that the number of participants in overseas working holiday has increased gradually and has attracted research attention.
This paper explores factors influencing the young’ intention to take part in overseas working holidays and takes three countries- Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom as examples. The focus will be on individual characteristics (age and work experience), personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness), and perceived risk (“environmental and social risk” and “agent and work place risk”) and analyze their influence on young peoples'
intention to participate in overseas working holiday.
Australia is the first country which offers working holiday to young people from Taiwan and is currently the most well-known. In addition, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of State, Taiwan ranked fifth among countries with international students in US in 2011. This reveals young people's preference to study in the US. Furthermore, the United Kingdom only recently allowed people from Taiwan to take working holiday, and this decision has attracted much attention. This study consequently takes the three countries of Australia, US, and UK as research subjects.
The sample consists of young workers and students at universities of north in Taiwan, with age ranging from 18 to 31. A total of 300 questionnaires were issued, and 204 valid questionnaires were recovered, with a recovery rate of 68%. Then, multiple regressions were employed for hypothesis testing.
The results of the study indicate that the factors influencing young people's intention to take part in working holiday in different countries were not entirely the same:
1. Age has significant negatively impact on the intention to take part in working holiday in Australia, US and UK; but work experience also has significant positively impact on the intention to take part in working holiday in Australia and US.
2. Neuroticism has significant negatively impact on the intention to take part in working holiday in US and UK; on the contrary, extraversion also has positively significant impact on the intention to take part in working party in US and UK; agreeableness also has positively significant impact on the intention to take part in working holiday only in Australia; surprisingly, no significant relationships were found between openness to experience, conscientiousness and the intention to take part in working holiday in Australia, US and UK.
3. “Environmental and social risk” and “agent and work place risk” are both negatively related to the intention to take part in working holiday in UK.
This study provides suggests for agents to increase the number of people to participate in overseas working holiday; for example, agents could provide information to in-school students, assess the suitability of their personality traits to various countries, and provide individualized itineraries, enabling students to obtain the newest and most accurate information while they are still busy studying, and helping them get ready for life after graduation. Besides, agents should strive to establish a good brand reputation, and thereby increase trust among travelers. From a research perspective, this study can also fill up the absence of studies in this area related to overseas working holiday about individual characteristics, personality traits and perceived risk.
