In the thesis, it is presented a theoretical and deductive study on the
phenomenon of corruption. In this study, this phenomenon is represented as a cause
and a consequence of human nature. Some crucial factors that lead to individual
situational corrupt behavior in institutional organizations are examined. By merging
crucial factors into a decision making process, a descriptive model that illustrates how
a situational deviant behavior in the organization leads to an individual’s decision
making is presented. With this model, corruption is described in three major stages: 1
the situational stage that describes a rationalized opportunity for corrupt behavior, 2
the decision making stage that covers intrapersonal and interpersonal evaluations and
3 the action stage. In conclusion, corruption is analyzed from a situational and
individual perspective within institutionalized social systems. And the model provides
a fundamental understanding of such phenomenon through the lens of institution
theory.
