Purpose:
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the health beliefs regarding amebiasis protective measures and their relationship with nationality, age, educational status, Chinese proficiency, pre-travel consultation and family income among immigrants.
Methods:
A cross-sectional design was conducted. Between June and October 2011, all permanent immigrants originating from amebiasis-endemic countries, attended by either the Taipei or Tainan Immigrant Service Center, Taiwan, and who reported a history of returning to their country of origin within the preceding 5 years were enrolled in the study. The valid sample was 384. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, logistic regression, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis Test.
Results:
The mean age of the subjects was 38.37 years (SD = 10.61), ranging from 20 to 83 years. The majority (70.31%) of participants did not receive travel information through a pre-travel consultation; The proportion of immigrants reported not doing amebiasis protective measures is 17%. Multiple regression analyses revealed that variables including travel consultation before travel, and lower amebiasis protective measures barrier significantly predicted the use of amebiasis protective measures during the return to their country of origin (R2=44.7% ,F=77.54, P〈0.001).
Conclusion:
More than 20% reported that they did not use measures to prevent amebiasis drug regimens. Immigrants had more consultation before travel, and lower perceived barriers the better amebiasis preventive behavior during the return to their country of origin. It is important to be aware of the health beliefs of immigrants regarding amebiasis preventive measures so that their own health can be protected and improved .
