This thesis aims to explore the theme of courage in isolation in John Milton’s Christian tragedy Samson Agonistes (1671) and to translate it into traditional Chinese. It also examines the correlation between Milton and his characters and presents them as Milton’s incarnations to express his own lifelong, determined courage in isolation to serve God and to rely on God alone in a post-Cromwell and then Restoration England.
The first half of this thesis focuses on the theme of courage in isolation in Milton’s life and his major poetic works. It starts with Milton’s unusual faith in God during the greatest tribulations in his life: the complete loss of his sight and the consequent loss of his political platform. It then applies the leitmotif of three temptations to analyze one representative in each of Miltonic poetic masterpiece: Abdiel in Paradise Lost, Jesus in Paradise Regained, and Samson in Samson Agonistes. Each faces his temptations alone, chooses to be obedient to God, is established for their real task and is later rewarded with everlasting glory. Among them, Samson bears the most striking resemblance with Milton.
The second half of this thesis deals with the translation of Samson Agonistes into traditional Chinese. It starts with the introduction of this author’s translating principles, which heavily relies on John Dryden’s promotion of paraphrase. It then details this author’s application of Dryden’s theory to her translation, the differences of the present versions in simplified Chinese and hers in traditional Chinese. It ends with the problem this author encountered and the future prospect and the author’s Chinese translation follows.
