This research discuss the application feasibility of variable speed limit sign (abbreviated to VSLS below) in Taiwan, considering three conditions such as comfortable, foggy, and lane closure on the freeway under two speed limit regulations: VSLS and fixed speed limit sign (abbreviated to FSLS below). Before the examinees drive the simulator, they have to fill out a questionnaire about the anticipation and opinions of VSLS. After the simulation test, they will be asked to fill another questionnaire about the feeling of VSLS. Finally, this research compares the difference of examinees’ anticipation and exact feeling about VSLS. Meanwhile, analyze the speed data and observe the speed variation in VSLS or FSLS scenario and various road conditions. The statistical results manifest that there is no significant difference upon speed variation under FSLS and VSLS in each experiment scenario; however, the differences are observed via data analysis and trajectories that the speed variation is much lower in VSLS cases. Scilicet, VSLS is exactly able to improve speed homogeneity on freeway. Furthermore, the examinees positively approve that VSLS can augment driving safety on the roadway, and they will sustain the policy when implementing.
