Based on trickster play and perspectives on picture books, the thesis aims to analyze Native North American picture books from the perspective of the trickster. It affirms that the picture books are the forms of trickster, which share the characteristics of trickster, and picture books are also representations of the tribal cultures, and finally picture books are storyteller inviting readers to produce Native culture together. This thesis consists three parts: Chapter One explains Deborah L. Duvall’s How Rabbit Lost His Tail: A Traditional Cherokee Legend (2003) and Rabbit and the Wolves (2005) are forms of trickster by demonstrating the similar traits of the tricksters; The Chapter Two focuses on Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest (2001) by Gerald McDermott and Maria Williams and Felix Vigil’s How Raven Stole the Sun (2001) to adopt trickster myths from the perspectives of tricksters and evolves into a discussion on how raven shown in the picture books can be seen as the spiritual motifs and Chapter Three discusses Gerald McDermott’s Coyote: A Trickster Tale from the American Southwest (1999) and Stephen Krensky and Kelly Dupre’s How Coyote Stole the Summer (2009) are neither the presentations of the trickster nor the representations of the tribal culture, but creations by all authors and readers.
