Abstract
This thesis compares and contrasts the family relationship in two literary texts—Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Stephenie Meyer’s New Moon—in terms of the family structure, parental interference and communication. Different from other studies, these two texts, I believe, bring up problems of tragic love stories that can be traced back to the disastrous family relationship of the main characters. Therefore, I use family theories to analyze the topic of family relationship.
The thesis consists of five chapters, each chapter addressing different aspects of family relationship. Chapter one begins with an introduction to the plots and the important characters. Chapter two explains how New Moon is a revision and a modernized version of Romeo and Juliet by demonstrating Stephenie Meyer’s use of Shakespearean references, as well as different reading strategies such as Shakespearean quotation, characterization, etc. to reinforce the effect.
Chapter Three introduces the fabric of family theories in the thesis, including parental interference, structure of family, communication in the family and their examples. Chapter Four discusses the awful family relationship in the Capulets which leads to the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet and analyzes the criticism on family relationship and romantic love in Romeo and Juliet.
In Chapter four, in addition to giving a review to the New Moon, this chapter also portrays its negative family relationship. Here New Moon is defined as a Gothic romance, mixed with Shakespearean references. Finally, in the concluding chapter, family relationship in both texts is given a final picture. Family Relationship in New Moon is slightly better than that in Romeo and Juliet. But the communication breakdown still leads to the disastrous romantic love relationship between the young couple.
