In bringing forth the manifold differences and the complex identifications of transgendered subjects in Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues, this thesis intends to interrogate not only the oppositional conceptualization of gender polarity and the exclusionary practice of contemporary identity politics inveighing against the variant gender outlaws, but also to illustrate how these variant models of transgender existence re-present their aesthetics politics and dynamics destabilizing the discursive hegemony of both hetero and homo normativities, thus re-working abjection into political efficacy and legitimacy. Mostly significantly, by limning the proliferation of gender dissidents in the novel, Feinberg sheds light on the ambivalent positions of these transgendered subjectivities, which problematize the conflation of sex, gender, and sexuality in both hetero and homosexual contexts.
This thesis is divided into five chapters. In chapter one, apart from the brief introduction of the text and the author dealing with the concept of trans subject, I incorporate the critical analyses illustrating the contradictory and the non-normative presentations of trans subjects as they re-negotiate through various social-cultural contexts as well.
In chapter two, by drawing upon Ding Naifei and Jen-Peng Liu’s insightful hypothesis of the reticent politics and the querying penumbrae[wangliang, shade of shadow 罔兩], I have elaborated the dichotomized ideology of identity politics in both hetero and lesbian communities excluding gender minorities into the domain of abject. In accordance with Foucauldian hypothetical analysis of the implementations of sexual deployment, I have also demonstrated how the interlocking mechanism of power and knowledge produce both the intelligible and unintelligible. In Judith Butler’s performativity of gender, we have come to the realization that the gendered subject is only a compulsory repetition through a series of stylized practices without the ontological truth.
In chapter three, I move on to depict the protagonist Jess Goldberg’s identity-searching journey, which is laden with discrimination and tribulation in the heterosexual hegemony. In constructing his/her contradictory formation of being a transgendered butch, s/he is incongruous in hetero, lesbian, and transsexual communities. Apart from butch, I would like to explicate the butch-femme gendered role dyad and femme subjectivities in this text, which most of time have experienced the pejorative understanding from the assimilation agenda of lesbian feminists.
In chapter four, I have illuminated the heterogeneous site of each gender variances , including the plethora categories of butch styles, wide variations of femme femininities, and the transitory and fluid models of transsexuals and transgenders across different socil-cultural background, class, self-expectaton, and embodiment.
