Aerobic exercise coaches are susceptible to voice disorders and laryngeal injuries because they must exercise and speak simultaneously in a high decibel musical environment. However, there are quite few, if any, studies addressing the prevalence of voice disorders in aerobic exercise coaches in Taiwan. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between prevalence of voice disorders, characteristics of voice disorders, voicing habits, teaching environment, training background, and so on in aerobic exercise coaches.
The subjects of this study were aerobic exercise coaches who had participated in 2012 AFAA TAIWAN APEX. And this study used a self-designed questionnaire named "Investigation Questionnaire for Voice Disorders in Aerobic Exercise Coaches” to examine the prevalence of voice disorders in aerobic exercise coaches. Besides, Fisher's exact probability test was also adopted to compare the differences between subjects with voice disorders and subjects without voice disorders in terms of personal information, life and health conditions, voice demands and voicing behaviors, speaking environments, self-perceived voice health status, and the impacts caused by voice disorders. A total of 293 questionnaires were handed out and 141 questionnaires were returned. The response rate was 48.1%. In this study, the voice data of aerobic exercise coaches were compared to the data of primary school teachers and general populations.
The results showed that the prevalence of current voice disorders in aerobic exercise coaches was 28.37%, which was significantly higher than the general population but similar to the primary school teachers. And the prevalence of voice disorders since working as an aerobic exercise coach was 49.65%, which was significantly higher than the general population, but significantly lower than primary school teachers. Among those aerobic exercise coaches, the most common laryngeal symptoms were dry throat, strained throat, and itchy throat. The most common vocal symptoms were hoarseness, effortfulness, and inability to sing high notes.
According to the results of this study, those aerobic exercise coaches who were female, took more weekly class hours, had taken dance courses, had no cardio training, had health problems, and with uncomfortable muscles were more likely to have voice disorders. These data was useful for helping the aerobic training institutions and healthcare professionals know the current status of voice problems in aerobic exercise coaches, and could serve as the theoretical basis for developing voice care programs.
