The content-analysis study aimed to investigate the continuity between English textbooks used in elementary schools and junior high schools in terms of the continuity of the amount of words in the English textbooks adopted in two levels of schools, the continuity between recognition words in elementary school English textbooks and production words in junior high school English textbooks, and the continuity of grammar concepts/sentence patterns in English textbooks in two levels of schools. The most frequently used version of elementary school English textbooks, New Wow English series (KHNW) and Hello, Darbie series (KHHD) published by Kang Hsuan, and the officially selected textbooks for junior high schools in northern Taiwan, i English series published by Hanlin (HIE) served as the subjects for the study purpose.
The research results show that first, a large percent (70%) of the words adopted in HIE 1are words learned by students in elementary schools, second, the percentage of learned words distributed from unit to unit is basically following spiral sequence, and third less than one third of the recognition words in KHNW1-6 and KHHD 6-7 are transferred as production words in HIE 1-2. Finally, every unit in HIE 1-2 includes one specific sentence patterns in addition to several sentences patterns learned previously. In other words, there is a close continuity between two levels of English textbooks in the word amount and sentence patterns and the arrangement of word distribution is basically confirmed to the spiral rule of curriculum design. Based upon the research results, some implications and suggestions are further offered.
