Junior- high boys usually use acting - out behaviors to present their depressive mood. Their depressive (acting-out) behaviors are referred as anti-social behaviors, although depressive disorders usually onset on junior high.

Behavior activation (BA) is an effective psychotherapy for treating depression. BA refers that depression is induced when a person has many negative behaviors but less positive behaviors. BA focuses on increasing a person’s positive behaviors but decreasing negative behaviors.

The purpose of the study was to apply BA as the treatment of preventing depression of junior high boys. The purpose of the study has two parts: (1) the cross-sectional study for examining the relationship between positive activities and positive/negative/depressive mood; (2) the longitudinal study for examining whether BA can increase positive behaviors but decrease negative behaviors.

Ninety-two and thirty-five junior high boys were recruited in the cross-sectional study and the longitudinal study separately. Pearson correlation, hierarchical regression analysis and ANCOVA were used in analyzing data of the study.

The results were as follows: (1) Items of junior high boys’ positive activities had significantly positive correlation with positive mood of them. Positive mood had significantly negative correlation with negative mood or depressive mood. (2) The accumulating amount of behavior activation can predict positive mood. The negative mood of the BA group was significantly lower than the control group after the group ending for 3 weeks or 3 months.
