The globalization of media and popularization of Internet gave rise to organized communities of fansub groups that work collaboratively subbing foreign mass media products and distributing it for free in the Web. This thesis investigates organizational structures and practices of fansub groups in Russia and China, two countries that have different background and approach of consuming foreign media. By using content analysis the community of fansub groups was examined and their organizational structure and communications, operating process, and requirements for members and newcomers were researched. Because members of fansub groups usually announce, share and discuss their plans and practices of subtitling projects in the corresponding online communities, the analytical data used in this study are exactly the text of posts in the online forums of the fansub groups. Therefore two fansub groups in each country to examine the phenomena of fansubtitling were chosen.
It was discovered that the organizational structure of fansubtitling community is hierarchical as well as the structure of forum members. Communicating patterns are similar in Russia and China, though the software using is different. Chinese fansub groups put more attention to the speed while Russian groups are more concerned of the quality which leads to the difference in the operational process. The recruitment process in fansub groups is more and more similar to the process in offline companies, which is more pronounced in Chinese groups. The skills required for newcomers are mostly linguistic and computer-oriented. Furthermore in Chinese groups the sense of responsibility, patience and free time contribution are also a request and clearly presented.
The analysis of fansub groups will help to gain deeper understanding of efficiently organized community of volunteer amateur translators as a social phenomenon. It will also help people willing to enter the group to understand groups’ distinct characteristics, preferences, strengths and weaknesses. Moreover the differences and similarities in online social grouping in different cultures of China and Russia were explored.
