In this dissertation, two types of AC light-emitting diode (LED) drivers with dimmable control are presented. By the suitable connection between LED strings and current sources as well as by the proposed control circuits based on digital control using the field programmable gate array (FPGA), the LED strings are turned on sequentially and dimmably controlled. By doing so, the total harmonic distortion (THD), crest factor (CF) and power factor (PF) of the proposed LED drivers are significantly improved as compared with the traditional AC LED drivers, so as to meet the IEC 61000-3-2 Class C standard. In addition, both the proposed AC LED drivers are capacitorless and inductorless in the main power stage as well as have no high- frequency switching. Therefore, these AC LED drivers have several advantages, such as little electromagnetic interference (EMI), easiness of circuit integration, high reliability and long lifetime. In this dissertation, the basic operating principles of the AC LED drivers with dimmable control are described in detail, along with some simulated and experimental results to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed two types LED drivers.
