The peoples of Senegal and The Gambia have ever been known to be one; sharing the same
languages and cultures. The 1981 coup in The Gambia which largely brought about the
Senegambia confederation would have been seen as a step towards the re-union of these peoples
if the confederation was equally to the interests of both countries. The confederation was created
to further enhance the fragile security and economic development of the two countries thereby
paving way towards a much stronger union; a union that could have been an example that could
have brought a significant impact on the regional cooperation on the entire African continent.
The dissolution of this union was largely regarded as due to the inequality of the distribution of
responsibilities and most importantly the fear of loss of sovereignty on the side of The Gambia
towards the implementation of certain clauses such as the customs union.
The objective of this research is to analyze the impact of the confederation of these closely
intertwined countries and why this union could not continue further; looking more importantly at
The Gambia’s negative attitude towards the implementation of certain clauses. In addition, the
cooperation between these two countries seems to be unavoidable because of the nature of The
Gambia’s location that almost cut Senegal into two. In this regard, this research is designed to
give the reader a clear understanding of the problem of these countries, and especially help
understand why The Gambia government and its people did not want total integration with
Senegal.
