Due to rapid growth in aging population of Taiwan, the concerns in elderly caring is an urgent issue, which one of them is the investigation on the indoor air quality of elderly day-care centers. As a result, this research intends to study cases selected in southern Taiwan as examples, collecting useful data and proposing suggestions for designers and nursing staff. The main purpose is to ensure comfortable and healthy indoor environment where senior residence live. Cases on this study are situated in southern Taiwan, including Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung city. By applying direct-reading instruments and satisfactory questionnaires, not only both of results are under intensive analysis and comparison, but also what factors, affecting thickness of pollutants in discrepancies, have been under discussion. The initial results of this study are: 1. In indoor temperate environment, half of 8 cases in this study exceed standard value 28°C of thermal comfort. Furthermore, taking standard value 25°C in healthy consideration, 7 of 8 cases are over that index. In air environment, 2 cases are significantly over standard value in TVOC, while other 2 cases of particles(PM10) are slightly over standard value. In conclusion, the study shows that the main goal, in current day-care centers for senior citizens, is to maintain adequate temperature and thickness in TVOC, ensuring the elderly’s comfort and health. 2. The data from cases in this research, which surpass standard value in temperature and particles(PM10), match results of satisfaction questionnaires in order. However, data and questionnaires in TVOC do not match. 3. Executed in turning point between summer and fall, the study demonstrates that the factors, significantly affecting indoor air quality, are outdoor air quality and ventilation’s methods in selection. Outdoor air, containing higher temperature and thickness in particles and TVOC, obviously affect indoor thermal and air quality. But in contrast, ventilation through outdoor air keeps qualified value in humidity, air velocity and CO2 in the indoor space. Otherwise, studies in caring aspects show that TVOC is higher thickness in case C because of its higher cleaning frequencies with high volume detergents. But more cleansing brings benefits in reducing particles’ thickness. In summary, compromising in cleansing frequencies and detergents’ volume could decrease thickness in particles and TVOC together.
