This thesis examines the relationship between teacher burnout, regulatory focus, and classroom management strategies among junior high school teachers from Tainan city, Taiwan. In this survey study, a sample of 249 teachers serving as class mentors responded to a set of three separate questionnaires: one questionnaire measures a teacher's regulatory focus (promotion versus prevention), another questionnaire measures his or her classroom management strategies (promotion-oriented or prevention-oriented), and the third questionnaire measures teacher burnout with respect to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Results from the three self-report measures showed that teachers with a promotion focus were more likely to adopt promotion-oriented classroom management strategies than their counterparts with a prevention focus. However, teacher burnout was related significantly only to regulatory focus and not to classroom management strategies. Furthermore, teachers with a promotion focus reported less emotional exhaustion, less depersonalization and more personal accomplishment than those with a prevention focus. The present findings imply that teacher burnout could be reduced if promotion-oriented classroom management strategies and promotional regulatory focus were adopted by junior high school teachers in the role of class mentors.
