波希 (Hieronymus Bosch, 1450-1516)為活躍於15末、16世紀初期尼德蘭地區的畫家,其作品常以愚人和半人半獸來表現人類道德沉淪的一面,畫中人物結合各類動物、昆蟲與機械,富含想像力。畫家啟蒙教育來自於父親安東尼 (Anthonius van Aken, 1420-1478) 的纖細畫工作室,因此早期畫風保有濃厚的國際哥德式傳統,人物造型雖然精緻,卻略顯刻板。1486年,波希藉由妻子阿萊特‧葛雅茨‧范德‧米爾文 (Aleyt Goyaerts van de Meervenne, 1425-1522/3) 的引薦,加入聖母瑪利亞兄弟會。由於兄弟會成員多為當時達官貴族,因此他開始獲得來自西班牙和尼德蘭地區皇室教廷的委託,轉而描繪大型祭壇畫,其作品內容多以諷刺時事的手法。1498年,波希秘密前往威尼斯總督府,接受高度文藝復興的薰陶。隨著解剖學的興起,他開始將人類、昆蟲、鳥類與其他野獸作進一步的融合與創新,並將這些複合性生物轉變他筆下造型奇幻的獄卒,以各式酷刑折磨罪人。波希愚人造型從1475年和1510年間,歷經粗鄙醜陋、諷刺醒世與奇幻複合三個階段的變化,然目前學術界的波希研究,主要仍以生平背景與詮釋畫作寓意為主,鮮少針對其愚人造型進行探析。因此,本論文研究目的在於分析愚人形成背景和造型風格演變歷程,並藉由圖像學闡釋波希之愚人表現特徵,與北方文藝復興之時代精神。
Hieronymus Bosch was a painter and active in Netherland between 15th and 16th century. His works use follies and therianthropies to present human’s moral destruction. The characters combine some kinds of animals, insects and machines. They are full of imagination. Bosch’ train is from the miniature studio of his father, Anthonius van Aken, and that makes Bosch’s early style keeps strong international Gothic tradition. The figures are delicate, but still stiff. In 1486, Bosch’s wife, Aleyt Goyaerts van de Meervenne, introduced him into the Brotherhood of Our Lady. Bcause the menbers almost were nobles and merchants, that resulted he was commissioned by royalties and churches of Spain and Netherland. His paintins’ sizes became to large altarpieces with satirizing social affairs. In 1498, Bosch went to the Ducal Palace secretly and been nutured by Italian high Renaissance. As the rise of anatomy, he began to mix human, insects, birds and other beasts into new figures, these combined creatures changed to fantasy soldiers who torture the sinners. From 1475 to 1510, the character design of Bosch’s follies varied for three times: ugly rough, social satire and fantasy combination. However, about current Bosch’ study, the chief research topics are on explaining his life and his paintings’ meanings, very few persons analyze his fools’s style. Consequently, the purposes of this thesis are investigating Bosch follies’ background, exploring why to change his forms in different periods, and explaining the features of his fools to figure out the spiritual of North Renaissance within iconology.
