Most of digital archive studies focused on the provenance of historical data and few researches investigated the users’ searching requirements in digital archives. Therefore, this research initially aimed to understand users’ searching behaviour, and then developed a method implemented on the searching system to satisfy the requirement of information needs. This research took colour brightness for example and applied the Fuzzy Set theory to construct membership function of colour brightness which would be adopted to match users’ demands. This main challenge is how to promote the users’ satisfaction on searching results via the membership function design. Instead of using classical membership function (ex: S-curve, triangular, etc.), we used designers’ professional colour judgments which were derived by questionnaire approach to structure membership functions. With the constructed membership function, users could obtain demanded archive information by setting searching indicator as lightness, darkness or unclear. By implementing the membership function on the searching interface, we could validate the users’ satisfaction on searching results. Among 30 testers, the validation results showed that most of the testers were satisfied with the searching results. Therefore, as we apply the systematic approach of membership function construction to other searching indicators, the objective of promoting the utilization of digital archive is expected to be achieved.
