Based on the literature review of architectural design principles, the architectural design system can be classified into three morphological systems - abstraction, materiality, and ambiguity. They debate the parallel line between form and function. Nevertheless, since the last decades after 1970s, the awareness of environmental hazard has caught many designers by surprise, and required designers to take ecological considerations as an integral part of the whole design process. In response to this emergent issue, Neil Leach (2009: 34-37) suggests that the contemporary architectural design moves away from an architecture based on purely visual concerns towards an architecture justified by its performance, which is influenced by environmental and other relevant parameters. The principle of design system should no longer focus on the interaction between form and function. Instead, the architectural design system should pay more attention to the interrelations between form and natural effect. On the basis of this detected shift, GreenMorphology is proposed in this research as a prototyping approach to draft a feasible route between form and natural effect.
The effect discussed here is not like the cultural definition as indicated by Farshid Moussavi. Better said, the effect is the prototyping principle of morphogenesis conducted by external elements, instead of the expressions of imagery or iconography built out of an internal order. In order to draft a feasible route between form and natural effect, the approach of GreenMorphology takes a mound-building of termite as a prototypical medium and adopts the analytical components, including “parametric environmental model”, “direction field”, and “color coding”, to test and to turn the effects into a prototyping process. It means that the prototyping process would start with the analysis of environmental parameters to establish the parametric environmental model, with which the direction field and color coding could be generated in dynamics. Then, the interrelation between the form and effect can be induced. Every object has form and material behavior in nature; thus, the approach of GreenMorphology inspired by the mound-building also consists of the prototyping process of form and material, which is characterized by wind effect and heat effect, respectively. According to these significant properties detected in the mound-building, the prototyping process of GreenMorphology is implemented by the interplays between the analytical components, and is divided into the topological system of kinesthesis and material to represent separately the form and material prototyping.
Through the study of the aforementioned interplay between form and natural effect, it is noteworthy that different prototypical media employed for GreenMorphology would be capable with various potentials that could be implemented in design development stage, and could add extra features to the design quality. Furthermore, the interplay between the analytical components also helps GreenMorphology to establish the feedback loop for prototyping process. With the mechanism of feedback loop, it facilitates GreenMorphology to formalize the logic with the language of math and geometry towards better solutions by adding more and more criteria to examine the feasibility of prototyping.
