火災原因調查之目的在於鑑定火災發生原因，以做為消防單位於預防措施、搶救對策、行政措施之依據，乃至於協助司法機關追究刑責或提供民事賠償審理之參考，因此火災原因調查鑑定的結果對於人民生命、財產與權力有重大的影響性。
火災調查鑑定人員需透過現場所殘留的燃燒跡象來判斷火流方向，藉此研判起火處，因此判斷火流方向為災後勘查的重點，而火流方向的判斷取決於火災調查鑑定人員個人的學理知識、火場搶救經驗與現場勘查鑑識經歷等因素。
本研究為提升火災調查鑑定人員的調查與鑑定能力，透過蒐集火災後的現場照片、分析現場燃燒跡象與說明判斷方式，並彙整製成APP程式，內容包含44個火災現場照片與說明，使用者觀察軟體顯示的照片並以手指於手機螢幕滑動表示判斷火流延燒方向，軟體判斷使用者滑動方向並於正確解答時顯示判斷方式的說明，藉此讓使用者達到累積火災現場勘查經歷的目的。

The main purpose of fire investigation is to determine and identify the cause of fires. The investigations not only serve as the basis of fire prevention, rescue strategies, and administrative measures for fire institutions, also assist the judiciary in pursuing criminal liability for perpetrators, or serves as a reference during civil compensation proceedings. Therefore, the results of fire investigations have a major impact on individual lives, property and rights.

Fire investigators should determine the fire flow direction from the combusted signs left at site to identify the fire source. Therefore, it is very important to determine the fire flow direction after the fire. To accurately identify the fire flow direction depends on the professional expertise and rescue experience at fire site, also the on-site investigation experience of investigators.

In order to enhance the investigative capabilities of fire investigators, an APP has been developed by organizing the photos collected at fire sites. It provides analyses of burn signs and explanations to extrapolate how the results were determined. Forty-four photos with captions at fire sites are included in the APP, so users can browse the images shown on the screen and determine the fire flow direction by sliding their fingers on the screen of the their smartphones. Once the users slide their fingers in a correct direction, a notice will pop up explaining the method used to determine the fire. This can achieve the goal of helping users to accumulate their experience from investigating fires on-site through this APP.
