The aim of this study is to examine the effects of computer input device the character and color on the visual performance, visual fatigue and subjective satisfaction of the novice computer users among schoolchildren. This study includes two experiments; experiment I investigates the effect of physical keyboard on visual performance and satisfaction; experiment II investigates the effect of screen keyboard on visual performance.
From two experiments, some conclusions have been made as follows: in the effect of Chinese character on typing time, the character had a significant effect on typing time. The best Chinese character is Bold-black type, which had the shortest typing time; the worst one is Sung type, which had the longest typing time. The legends had a significant effect on satisfaction. The best Chinese character for satisfaction is Regular script type. In the effect of color collocation on visual performance, no matter the color difference or lightness difference between English letters Chinese characters and keys (backgrounds), that had significant effects on visual performance. When the color difference and lightness difference became greater, the typing time became shorter. In visual fatigue, differences in models had significant effects. Those subjects that used the samples that were picked from used keyboards in the computer classroom of an elementary school were found to have higher average critical fusion frequency than those who used new models.
In the effect of screen keyboards Chinese character on typing time, the screen keyboards had a significant effect on typing time. The best Chinese character is Bold-black type, which had the shortest typing time; the worst one is Sung type, which had the longest typing time. The screen keyboards had a significant effect on satisfaction. The best Chinese character for satisfaction is Regular script type. In the effect of lightness collocation on visual performance, lightness difference between Chinese characters and keys (backgrounds) that had significant effects on visual performance and subjective satisfaction. The screen keyboard designed in white word and black background had the shortest typing time and highest satisfaction.
