船舶機能設計階段必定產生之機艙裝備佈置圖及管路系統圖，在機艙設計全面立體化後，這兩種二維圖面所含的資料都存在於三維裝備連接關係立體模型(ECM)。然而，三維管路施工模型(3DP)早已廣泛應用在管路施工細部設計階段。
備連接關係立體模型與三維管路施工模型二者的閥、溫度或壓力表、岐管之數量則應完全一致，但前者所示之直管總長、法蘭、墊片、肘管(含彎管)總數應該少於後者。
若比較之樣品船數量夠多，則可較確定此兩種立體模型之管路物料差異比率之範圍，在未來機艙機能設計階段完成裝備連接關係立體模型後，即可大略推算出建造該機艙管路所需之物料數量與重量，對管路物料採購與管控、管路施工外包成本之推算，均為重要依據。
本研究針對一艘油輪以及一艘拖船做主機冷卻淡水系統與主機潤滑油系統的裝備連接關係立體模型與三維管路施工模型的物料，初步統計出此兩種上述二種管路系統模型裡之管路元件物料的差異及比值，並分析出造成管路物料數量差異的因素。希望能對造船廠在機能設計階段大略推測管路建造所需物料的方法，提供一參考。

Engine Room Arrangement and Piping System Diagrams are two sets of drawings produced in the functional design phase of a ship engine-room. These design drawings can be replaced by a single three-dimensional (3D) CAD model, called Equipment Connectivity Model (ECM), once the 3D model is fully adapted in the functional design phase. However, 3D piping working design (3DP)models have been commonly used and layout in the detail design phase.
The total amounts of pipe components such as valves, Tee-branches, and temperature and pressure gauges shown in the ECM should be the same as that of 3DP. Other pipe components, including pipes, elbows, flanges, gaskets, shown in 3DP might be more than that in ECM.
If, through sufficient amount of comparisons, the ranges of the differences in total amounts of each type of pipe component in the ECM and 3DP models can be known, one can get reasonable predictions on the pipe components needed for building a ship engine-room based on the materials shown in the ECM. Such information is very useful in contracting the construction jobs and controlling the pipe materials.
The ECM and 3DP models of the M/E Cooling Fresh Water and Lubrication Oil Systems of an oil tanker and a tug have been studied. The ranges of material differences were studied, and the factors to cause such differences have been analyzed. The results of this study provide a basic guide to shipyards to use ECM model and predict pipe component materials needed for building a ship engine-room.
