This study aims to reveal demographic features among word intelligibility, speaking rate and oral diadokinetic rate in non-neurologically-impaired Mandarin speakers in Taiwan, including age, gender, socioeconomic status, residential distribution, and habitual language using), as well as to compare the differences across the parameters. Materials used included 600 two-syllable Chinese words, a Chinese essay (Chen, 1996) and four sets of syllables (/pa/, /ta/, /ka/, /pataka/). A total of 198 participants (Mage= 56.33, Range= 20-88) were included to assess the word intelligibility, speaking rate and oral diadokinetic rate. The result showed that the word intelligibility, speaking rate and oral diadokinetic rate were significantly different in age; young participants spoke faster than the olders; the Southern people showed lower word intelligibility than the Northerns and Centrals; and people with habitually using Mandarin were performed better than those who are not in Word Intelligibility. However, there was no difference in gender. In addition, significant positive median correlations were also found among the above speech variables (p< .001); of which, the parameters of the speaking rate and oral diadokinetic rate could predict word intelligibility performance. The findings would be discussed in the coming chapter 5, leading to provide a clinical reference for further evaluation in disordered population.
