“Da Dao” by Tung Rung-sen is a jinghu concerto accompanied by a Chinese orchestra. Its significance is also due to the fact that it was the first Taiwanese jinghu concerto. Composed to pay homage to one of the Ten Major Construction Projects in the 1970s, the National Highway No.1, the piece took Tung Rung-sen over two years to compose. On May 29, 1959, Tung Rung-sen premiered “Da Dao” at the Chinese Music Department of the National Academy of Arts’ biannual student concert Retrospect and Prospect of Fold Music. This paper discusses the innovations in the composition of “Da Dao”. Beginning with the composer’s personal music learning experiences and contributions, the paper then introduces the characteristics of huqing and jinghu as well as Tung Rung-sen’s Huqing performing skills. Afterwards, “Da Dao” is discussed from the perspective of its creation backgrounds and structure.; an analysis is thus made on its musical form and content. Finally, the impact of the piece to composition of music is explored. This paper aims not only to allow the author to gain more knowledge on jinghu from the analysis and discussion of the research topic but also provide important information on jinghu music to enthusiasts.
