This study investigates the effects of different working factors (wheel sizes, handle heights and cart loads) and physical fitness (BMI, muscle endurance and cardiovascular endurance) on cart pushing task. Performance measurements included muscle voluntary contraction (VC), heart rate (HR) and borg scale (rating of perceived exertion, RPE). There are two parts in this study. First, the human related data measurements include anthropometry, fitness. Second, in the cart pushing experiment, there are 30 subjects (15 females and 15 males) recruited in this study. Three different wheel sizes (4 inches, 6 inches, and 8 inches), three handles height (90 cm, 115 cm, and 130 cm), and three loadings (140 kg, 180, kg, and 220 kg) use in this experimental design. The results showed that there are significant different between male and female of all performances. In addition, cart loads affect subject’s performance significantly along with cart weight, and when operating with 6 inch and 8 inch wheels have better performance than 4 inch. The physical fitness of BMI, muscle endurance and cardiovascular endurance are significantly affecting the performance, and there are some interaction effects between those ability and wheel sizes; there is a trend shows the performances getting better when using bigger wheels, even though the fitness abilities are not good. This study suggested the cart design should choose bigger wheels, handle height between subject’s elbow and shoulder, and cart load keep as light as possible. In addition, the fitness abilities should choose beyond normal condition.
