The purpose of this study was to develop an English training material for Aviation Maintenance Technician and to summatively evaluate its effects on improving their English reading abilities. Their perspectives of this material were also under investigation.
The material was designed based on trainees’ need analysis and focused on encouraging trainees toward English learning. It consisted of 3 modules, maintenance documentation system layout, aircraft system identification, and fundamental knowledge on maintenance skills, which were designed following international regulations.
The target trainees were technicians working at an Air Force jet engine maintenance facility. The majority possessed college degrees in science and technology. However, their ability to read manuals written in English was insufficient. This phenomenon posed a challenge to technicians; due to reading maintenance manuals was essential to their daily work to maintain various Air Force operated jet engines.
This was a two-stage study, started with trainees’ needs assessment based on literature review, policy trends, and field observations. Trainees’ necessities, wants, and lacks were involved. The drafted material was reviewed by 3 experts and modified accordingly. The material and testing instruments were piloted and revised afterward.
The second stage, the study, consisted of a pretest, 9 weeks of training, a posttest, and perspective survey. The survey was composed with a 10-item questionnaire and 5 interview questions.
The result of the reading test indicated that the materials effectively improved trainees’ English reading ability. The result of the questionnaire revealed that trainees tended to agree that the materials could improve their English reading ability and technical English. In the interview section, the majority of the selected interviewees argued this materials could motivate them to continuous improving English reading ability.
Based on the study results, some training-concerned suggestions were provided, such as need assessment, training hours, and training schedule. The implications for future researchers and instructors were also provided.
