ABSTRACT

In recent years, due to deteriorating global warming, there has been increasing attention to home energy saving, which is often a serious and not so interesting task. Most of energy-saving systems focus on providing energy-usage information without considering the factor to make the systems more playful. In this regard, we propose an eco-feedback system with a pet-nurturing game integrated virtual and physical environments in hopes of enhancing users' experience and prolonging users' engagement.
The contribution of this study is threefold: (1) The integration of virtual and physical environments enriches eco-feedback to help users better understand of the environmental impact of their behavior. (2) We are the first to use a context-aware pet-nurturing game to make energy-saving more playful and to enhance immersive experience of the users. (3) By incorporating context-awareness related technologies, the system can provide timely feedback regarding electricity consumption. The pet avatar in the game can also reflect the activities the users undertake in the environment, and then provides the users with real-time visualized feedback.
