This study focuses on exploring the impacts of strategy selection on firms'' performance in Taiwan''s mechanical industry with the panel data. Based on Porter''s (1980) generic strategy variable, corporations are divided into low cost, differentiation, none, and hybrid strategies. This study consists of three main stages. First, the relationship between different strategies and performances is explored. Then the relationship between strategic change and performance is discussed. Finally the existence of ideal configuration for different strategies is identified. The data of this study was collected from Taiwan Economic Journal database, with 64 mechanical corporations in Taiwan ranging from 2004 to 2013.

The empirical results show that corporations adopting hybrid strategy have the best performance, then those with the differentiation strategy. There are no significant difference in performance between low cost and none strategy. Strategy change cannot promise performance improvement. It needs to find the appropriate strategy change path. Ideal configuration of different strategy does exist in Taiwan’s machinery industry.
