The contribution of creative industries to world economy has widely been acknowledged in the last few decades. Although creative industries show high business birth rates, the failure rate of new creative businesses is equally high. However, little effort has been made to understand what determines entrepreneurial motivation and endurance in running creative businesses. Drawing upon Maslow’s motivation theory and entrepreneurial motivation theory, this study develops a theoretical framework, which demonstrates how entrepreneurial creativity and opportunity recognition influence entrepreneurs’ withdrawal intention through strengthening four types of entrepreneurial motivation, namely entrepreneurial needs, work-life equilibrium, social reputation, and career achievement. We used structural equation modeling with a sample of 259 entrepreneurs in creative industries to test our hypotheses. As anticipated, results showed that the effects of entrepreneurial creativity and opportunity recognition on withdrawal intention are mediated by entrepreneurial motivation. Among the four types of entrepreneurial motivation, work-life equilibrium and career achievement were found to reduce entrepreneurs’ withdrawal intention. This paper provides strong evidence for understanding how the entrepreneurial motivation decreases creative entrepreneurs’ intention to quit the new ventures.
