Abstract

Recent studies reveal that the extent of attachment security affects prejudice, and attachment style is related to prosocial behavior and prejudice. It was assumed that attachment style and prosocial behavior have significant relationship, and examined the mediation effect of prosocial behavior between attachment style and prejudice. The attitude to denizened spouses was used as prejudice. The sample consists of 325 college students from 18 to 24 years old (Mean= 20.5, SD= 1.2). The instruments included Attachment Style Scale, Awareness of Suffering Scale, Altruism Scale, and Attitude toward Denizened Spouses Scale. Gender, religion, and contact level with denizened Spouses were included as covariance in later analysis.
The results support the hypothesis one that there was a significant correlation between secure attachment style, prosocial behavior, and prejudice. Secure attachment style has a positive relationship with prosocial behavior, and has a negative relationship with prejudice. Secondly, the second hypothesis was supported that there was a significant correlation between fearful-avoidant attachment style, prosocial behavior, and prejudice. Fearful-avoidant attachment style has a negative relationship with prosocial behavior, and has a positive relationship with prejudice. Finally, prosocial behavior did not mediate the relationship between secure attachment style and prejudice. The implications and suggestions to future research, and counseling application were addressed.

Key words: attachment , prosocial behavior, prejudice.
