We would like to investigate the speech perception of mandarin speaking children with speech sound disorders (SSD) using 2 different tasks – speech sound discrimination and syllable monitoring. We have recruited 40 subjects aged between 4;6 – 6;6. They were assigned into the SSD group and the control group according to their PR scores on an articulation test. Results proved that mandarin speaking children with SSD did encounter problems on their speech perception. Their correct rate were lower on both the discrimination and the monitoring tasks. They were also found to react slower to stimuli in the monitoring task. The scores of the two speech perception tasks were moderately correlated with each other as well as the PCC of the subjects. Results also indicated that subjects achieved better correct rate when stimuli were presented in a matching order; subjects scored less when stimuli were presented at the back of the carrier sound. Subjects responded in a shorter reaction time when the length of the stimuli was longer; it took longer time to react when stimuli were presented at the front of the carrier sound; reaction time was shorter when the carrier was in a length of 7 syllables. The correct rate of both groups were comparable on stimuli composed of syllables of low occurrence frequency, while there was a significant difference between groups when stimuli were composed of syllables of high occurrence frequency.
